IP Camera Market Growth

  • Important to Match the Camera to the Requirement
    • A Mega-Pixel Camera will produce a superb quality Image, but it will also use up significantly more bandwidth than a camera using 350k Pixels. If you don't need Mega-Pixel quality, don't get it.
    • If you don't need PTZ, don't pay for it.
    • If you can run cables, don't pay for wireless; wired is always better then wireless.
  • Camera Selection Choices
    1. 1) CCTV (Closed Circuit TV)
      1. Video Server
      2. Video Capture Card
      3. Wired - Video/Power
    2. 2) IP Cam
      1. Wired - PoE
      2. No Capture Card/Video Server needed
      3. Easily viewed over LAN
  • Camera Considerations
    • Need Power
      • Power Consumption
      • POE - Power Over Ethernet
      • Even "Wireless" cameras need power
      • Use a "wired" camera w/PoE
    • Wireless
      1. IP Cameras connected to a WAP or Mesh Network
      2. Only use as Required
    • IP/WebServer Camera
      • Cameras accessed via Ethernet/Video Capture
      • PC Camera (USB) N/A for Video Surveillance
    • Options/Considerations
      • Lighting Critical for Image Quality
      • Day/Night - Infrared - Night Vision
      • Minimum Illumination
      • In-Side vs Out-Side - Weather Proof Housing
      • Ruggedized Housing
      • Mount Types
      • PTZ - Pan - Tilt - Zoom (Optical/Digital)
      • Pan/Tilt Degrees
      • Manual Zoom
      • Lens Size/Type
      • Number of Pixels
      • Resolution
      • FPS - Frames per Second
      • Compression
      • Color vs BW
      • Focal Length - Field of View - Calculator
        • Distance Example - 4m - 1/4' Lens
        • A "Normal" Focal Length on a 35mm Camera is approx. 50mm - it produces the same perspective as the human eye
        • 18mm to 35mm is considered wide-angle
        • 80mm to 500mm is considered telephoto
        • These numbers are not necessarily the same, however, a lower number still produces a wider view (wide-angle) then a higher number
      • Audio
      • Sensors

  • General Video Surveillance Considerations
    • NO Guarantees that any specific activity will be recorded

    • General Coverage is provided, but NOT every area is normally covered

    • Many of the Cameras are PTZ and the actual recording will depend upon the position of the Camera at any given time

    • Detail/Clarity will vary with Distance from Camera

    • Generally No Mug-Shots; some exceptions – luck, doors, etc

    • Patrolling Options: broad coverage, may miss specific actions, but will view results; provides a general sense of security (all is well), vs. monitoring a specific area.

    • Lighting affects quality of images; Time of day, shadows, night, etc

    • Better the Image; the more disk space required for recording

    • Video Servers more sensitive to Network Traffic

  • CCTV Video/Wireless Devices
    • Video Only - NO PTZ Controls
    • Not Recommended
